    Digital mapping of mountain snowcover under European conditions

    The author has identified the following significant results. A method for monitoring the snow cover in high mountain terrain such as the Swiss Alps includes the rapid classification of multitemporal data for small watersheds with very high accuracy. In addition to LANDSAT channels 4,5,6 and 7 an artificial channel was created containing the average altitude information of each pixel and allowing a subdivision of the watershed in accordance to the requirements of the runoff model. Even in very small watersheds of about 40 sq km the results achieved from LANDSAT data are at least as accurate as the ones gained from measurements of orthophotographs

    The author has identified the following significant results. Analog processing of S190A and B color and infrared color transparencies showed that it is possible to evaluate the courses of the temporary snow line and the upper limit of vegetation growth over large areas. By transferring the results from S190A onto a topo-map 1:200,000, an accuracy of + or - 50 m could be achieved. With S190B transferred onto a map 1:100,000, an accuracy of + or - 20 m was reached. Digital processing of S192 multispectral data allowed a separation of snow and clouds by combining the information from channels 9, 15, and 18

A system was developed to operationally map and measure the areal extent of various land use categories for updating existing and producing new and actual thematic maps showing the latest state of rural and urban landscapes and its changes. The processing system includes: (1) preprocessing steps for radiometric and geometric corrections; (2) classification of the data by a multivariate procedure, using a stepwise linear discriminant analysis based on carefully selected training cells; and (3) output in form of color maps by printing black and white theme overlays of a selected scale with photomation system and its coloring and combination into a color composite

    Inferring decoding strategy from choice probabilities in the presence of noise correlations

    The activity of cortical neurons in sensory areas covaries with perceptual decisions, a relationship often quantified by choice probabilities. While choice probabilities have been measured extensively, their interpretation has remained fraught with difficulty. Here, we derive the mathematical relationship between choice probabilities, read-out weights and noise correlations within the standard neural decision making model. Our solution allows us to prove and generalize earlier observations based on numerical simulations, and to derive novel predictions. Importantly, we show how the read-out weight profile, or decoding strategy, can be inferred from experimentally measurable quantities. Furthermore, we present a test to decide whether the decoding weights of individual neurons are optimal, even without knowing the underlying noise correlations. We confirm the practical feasibility of our approach using simulated data from a realistic population model. Our work thus provides the theoretical foundation for a growing body of experimental results on choice probabilities and correlations

A system was developed for operational snow and land use mapping, based on a supervised classification method using various classification algorithms and representation of the results in maplike form on color film with a photomation system. Land use mapping, under European conditions, was achieved with a stepwise linear discriminant analysis by using additional ratio variables. On fall images, signatures of built-up areas were often not separable from wetlands. Two different methods were tested to correlate the size of settlements and the population with an accuracy for the densely populated Swiss Plateau between +2 or -12%

    The author has identified the following significant results. Two different methods, an analog and a digital one, have been developed for rapid and accurate mapping of the areal extent and changes in snow cover in high mountains. The quick-look method is based on individual visual control of each image using a photo quantizer which provides exact references for density slicing with high resolution lith-film. The digital snow classification system is based on discriminant analysis with the data of the four multispectral bands as variables and contains all preprocessing, feature extraction, and mapping steps for an operational application. Two different sets of sampling groups were established which apply to different conditions of snow cover. The first one serves for the normal situation with a uniform dry and new cover. The second one serves for situations with partly thawing and/or frozen snow
